Strings can be one of the most overlooked pieces of gear by many guitarists. In essence, strings are the input source of the energy that goes into your instrument. Many players will choose a string type based on the recommendation of a friend, teacher, or guitar shop salesman. As you develop your ear and become a more fluent player, you will begin to learn the subtle nuances that the strings alone bring to your particular style of play. Once that occurs, one will find that there are an infinite number of choices out there in the marketplace and one type does not fit all instruments and playing styles. This can be confusing so it is best to ask yourself some questions to help narrow down the choices. I outlined two specific questions you should ask yourself to get started.

A few blogs ago, I received a bunch of questions about the origins of Guatemalan Rosewood. My response was “a certain valley in a certain country that only I have access to”. This seemed to upset some people. I have decided to give you a hint. The country is Nicaragua. Yes, it is odd that Guatemalan Rosewood trees grow in Nicaragua, but trees do not pay attention to boarders.
This is my valley.
This is me on behalf of C.F. Martin & Co donating money to gentleman named Oscar.
He started his Rosewood farm using seeds he found in the forest.

Muchos Gracias, Oscar!
The Cumberland Ridge Runners enjoyed several years of popularity as a stage and radio show on WJJD and WLS out of Chicago as well as West Virginia's WWVA. They were all well-seasoned and talented musicians, though it was the custom to dress down and ham it up, taking full advantage of their rural hillbilly roots. Some of the shows bordered on Vaudeville comedy.
Doc Hopkins is in the center with what looks like a very early 14-fret D-18 while Randy Blake is on the far right with his ascot holding his 12-fret D-28 herringbone. Our best guess for the time period is the mid 1930s. The sound of those booming Dreadnought Martins clearly rumbled through the audience making it necessary for attendees to consume Stuart's Dyspepsia Tablets in large quantities and fan themselves free of any headaches or nervousness. What a lucrative honor for the band to participate in such a clever ad campaign. The fan traveled a long way to reside in the Martin archives where it will be forever treasured and kept in reserve for heat-flash emergencies!

CITES stands for Convention for the International Trade of Endangered Species. It is an international agreement that has been in effect since 1975. Its goal is to ensure that international trade of wildlife does not threaten the survival of species or the ecosystem. Nations participate in and adhere to CITES regulations voluntarily, but for those nations participating it is legally binding.
As many of you know, CITES recently held its 17th Conference of Parties in Johannesburg, South Africa. At that event all Rosewood (except Brazilian Rosewood which was already on Appendix I) and three species of Gubortia aka Bubinga were put on Appendix II. This ruling has caused much confusion and panic in the guitar world. I am here to help. If you have any questions, comment below and I will do my best to answer.

Final Days To #JoinTheFamily
One Week Left To #JoinTheFamily
After many years of playing guitar, I'm finally ready to design and purchase a custom Martin guitar. I've been thinking a lot about what tone woods I would like. What do you think is best for my blues playing? Do different genres of music really make a difference when choosing tone woods? -- I've Got The Blues
Custom Shop Administrator-Emily
Dear I've Got The Blues,
Picking a tone wood can be hard because they are all different, none of them are better or worse. It is all a matter of what sounds good to your ear. To me, Eric Clapton's 000 he played on MTV's Unplugged sounds fantastic in a blues setting. The model was a Rosewood 000 short scale with a spruce top. Rosewoods typically give you more bass and boom. Clapton's 000 is a smaller body so it really balances out the Rosewood and makes it a great blues guitar. The top is also important to the sound of the instrument. A spruce top will help project and focus your sound. There are a handful of different spruce species. Each have their own sound, and that's a whole different topic! If you want a mellow blues sound, try a mahogany back and side guitar. If you try one and find you want an even more mellow sound, put a mahogany top on your custom guitar.
Also the genre doesn't necessarily matter as much as what your ear wants to hear. Blues can really range from broken down old-school like Robert Johnson and his L-1 to plugged in Texas blues like Stevie Ray Vaughan. Whatever your style, I would recommend trying out a short scale guitar (24.9"). You can bend notes easier and also sound great playing rhythm. You can manipulate the strings easier and get those sweet blues licks and bends without cramping your hand. --Emily

ONCE is a truly amazing Broadway experience that won eight Tony awards in 2012, including Best Musical. It boasts an impressive and talented cast that play Martin guitars during the performance. We had a great time showing the cast around the factory and sharing the history of Martin guitars they play!

There's not much we can add to the enormous outpouring of grief and fond memories spurred by the death of singer-songwriter Jason Molina, only to offer our condolences. To all of the Martin guitar players out there, let Molina be of particular inspiration to you. Many had not heard of him during his lifetime, but the endless well of songs that lived within him will soon be legendary. The words of those who knew him, from Steve Albini to his friends at Secretly Canadian, point to an artist who had a nearly unbridled capacity to create. If you're not familiar with his recordings under Songs: Ohia or his band, Magnolia Electric Co., go check them out. Music is what inspires us here at Martin Guitar. Here, we’ll be bringing you a selection of what’s coming out of the stereos in our factory.
Tony Sheridan, the only man who could claim the Beatles as his backing band, passed away this week at the age of 72. The British rock'n'roll pioneer was part of the same Hamburg scene as the Beatles, performing in the Kaiserkeller, Top Ten, and Star Clubs. Sheridan, Lennon, Harrison and McCartney even recorded 9 songs together in 1961 and 1962, with “My Bonnie,” “The Saints,” “Why (Can’t You Love Me Again),” “Nobody’s Child,” “Take Out Some Insurance On Me, Baby,” “Sweet Georgia Brown,” “Swanee River,” “Cry for a Shadow,” and “Ain’t She Sweet" being laid down in those sessions. It was their rollicking rendition of "My Bonnie" that grabbed the attention of future Beatles manager Brian Epstein.
Sheridan played a number of instruments over his long and fruitful career, and can be seen in the photos below with his Martin D-18E , our early stab at an acoustic-electric, circa 1960. Perhaps not by coincidence, this was the same model Kurt Cobain would go on to use for his MTV Unplugged performance over 30 years later. In the live shot, Sheridan has some pretty illustrious musicians backing him up indeed.
The biggest news in music this week was the 55th Annual Grammy Awards show! First of all, congratulations to Martin Ambassadors Mumford & Sons on winning Album of the Year! We were proud to see so many Ambassadors nominated - Mumford & Sons, the Avett Brothers, the Lumineers, Ed Sheeran, Hunter Hayes, and Dierks Bentley were all up for awards. Even Martin-sponsored Broadway smash Once earned an award, winning Best Musical Theater Album. In addition to so many big wins, Martin guitars popped up throughout the show. Here's a quick look at just a few of them:

The BMI Awards, one of the most prestigious honors in the industry, is always one of our favorite events. This year, in addition to our Ambassador, Hunter Hayes, earning a medallion for the chart-topping performance of his single, "Wanted," was a fantastic surprise: a performance by Martin Ambassadors The Avett Brothers in tribute to legendary songwriter Tom T. Hall. The songwriter, known as "The Storyteller," was honored as a BMI Icon, and stars from all ends of the Country and Americana spectrum gathered to perform in celebration of the occasion. Below are photos of the Avett's incredible performance of Hall's hit, "That's How I Got to Memphis."
Our Artist Welcome Lounge at the 2012 CMAs was a huge success, and we loved getting to see all our favorite country stars stop by to pick up and strum a song or two on the gorgeous Martins we had out for them!
America’s Hooked On Nashville
Not only are publications like the Wall Street Journal following the exploits of this sensational cast (read their recap of episode 2 here), and fascinated by how real music industry heavyweights approach their roles (Rolling Stone interviews J.D. Souther about his role on Nashville here), but they also see the value and authenticity a name like Martin brings to the entire enterprise. The Hollywood Reporter looks into exactly this, here. With over 5,000,000 people tuning in each week, that’s a lot of brand awareness for our beautiful instruments!
Martin Pride on Nashville
In addition to our amazing instruments, Martin gear got a great shout out in this week’s episode when one of the show’s main protagonists, Deacon, was seen in a Martin Tree of Life Tee!
Band Of Skulls: Martin's Newest Ambassadors
This British band has been making waves ever since a thunderous performance at the SXSW festival, and are only just getting started. We are thrilled to have a rock act as fierce and melodic as Band Of Skulls representing our band. With over 169,000 fans on Facebook and 396,000 Twitter followers, they'll be singing Martin's praises to a vast new audience. You can see an acoustic performance of their hit single, "Sweet Sour," below, and see their tour dates at their website.
You may have heard about the awesome time we at Martin had during our recent visit as part of IBMA's week-long Fan Fest, but you might not be familiar with what, exactly, the IBMA is. The International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA), formed in 1985, has helped to keep the torch of bluegrass music - which is very near and dear to our hearts - burning brightly ever since.
In John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath, camps of families displaced by the Great Depression and the Dustbowl are brought together through music. A string-band banging away at a dance brings life to the crowd here, an intimate group on the porch huddle around the musical warmth of a guitar there; the instrument and the people work together to create magic in a land that is growing bleak. And really, a D-28 and a horizon to travel toward are almost all you need to be happy. It's the beauty of Martin's heritage, of a homeland so wide and varied as to be truly limitless.
The Avett Brothers' The Carpenter Out Tomorrow
The eagerly awaited seventh (!) album by Martin Ambassadors The Avett Brothers comes out this Tuesday. Following up on the enormous success of their 2009 LP, I And Love And You, The Carpenter marks the second time the band has teamed up with legendary producer Rick Rubin. Read more about the partnership between Rubin and the Avetts on Billboard, and hear the record now on NPR's First Listen, here.

As we approach July 4th, the day we celebrate America's independence, we are reminded that this freedom was not won in just one day, centuries ago. It is earned day after day by Americans of all stripes - from teachers, to government workers, to manufacturers, to artists - but by none more directly or often at greater cost than those serving in our Armed Forces. Which is why, since 2006, we have been sending LXMs, LX1s, LXMEs, LXK2s and more to SGTs, SPCs, LCPLs, MAJs, PFCs and many others while they serve our country overseas.

The word virtuoso usually conjures images of long-tailed coats behind grand pianos, and shredders usually bring to mind blistering solos and rock gods. Tommy Emmanuel (www.tommyemmanuel.com), to be sure, is both. One of the great masters of his instrument, able to infuse any piece with bounce, heart, groove, and guts, laying into the rhythm and lead lines all at once, Emmanuel has been playing guitar since he was 4, and you can bet it shows. Don't take our word for it - here's a video of this shredder/virtuoso doing what he does best:

This week's Factory Favorite is an album that pushed the acoustic guitar to new realms of sonic territory while also keeping it planted firmly in simple, good songwriting: Neutral Milk Hotel's In The Aeroplane Over The Sea.
Right now a brave cadre of the Martin team is over at Musikmesse, one of the biggest instrument shows in the world. Located in Frankfurt, this event is where all the biggest makers of guitars - and pretty much every other instrument - get together to introduce to the world their latest designs. Beside eating as many sausages, wursts, and schnitzels as we can, we're having a great time showing these new models off. Here are some photos from the show!
And we're not talking about insane babies on the cover of Vogue. It's Musikmesse (more on that tomorrow), and that means we're rolling out some of our new items. Without further adieu, here they are:

Unreleased Michael Jackson Songs Stolen (SPIN)
After almost a year, it's finally come to light that a major PlayStation hack last spring also involved the theft of more than 50,000 tracks from Sony Music's catalog, which included Michael Jackson's entire back catalog and a bunch of unreleased tracks. This shocking bit of information came with the first court appearance of two British men arrested last May who are suspected of having a part in the fiasco. More.

"Not many, but much," meaning essentially "quality, not quantity"—Frank Henry Martin's motto, and the spirit that has carried the Martin name through the Civil War, the Great Depression, multiple World Wars, recessions, and all of the highs and lows that the United States of America has collectively faced. Born on October 14, 1866, Frank Henry was the grandson of the company's founder, C.F. Martin. At only 22 years of age, his father, C.F. Martin, Jr., passed away, and Frank Henry found himself in charge of what was already the oldest guitar-making firm in the country. Luckily, Frank had a keen interest in woodworking, and by the time he took the helm in 1888, he had already put many years of work in the factory under his belt and was a fully trained luthier.
