THE ARCHIVE ROOM: THE CHORD WHEEL

Dick Boak of the Martin Archives here!

Because of my need to constantly transpose from key to key, I became obsessed with transposition wheels (like circular slide rules). This obsession took me through many evolutions until I gradually started adding chords and other features, finally completing “Dick Boak’s Musical Chord Wheel for the Guitarist” in 1979.This was a smashing failure because it required the user to cut out and assemble the three wheels as well as the many windows – a difficult task to say the least.

Many decades later while doing a seminar in Belgium, I met web programmer Davy Van Laere who created an ingenious online digital version of the wheel, no assembly required. I must say, it’s pretty cool! You can check it out here.
